Constitutional lawyer Kwame Adofo has issued a scathing critique of former President John Mahama’s handling of the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, warning that the move sets a perilous precedent for Ghana’s democratic and judicial systems.
In an interview with ABC News Gh on Wednesday, following the Chief Justice’s press conference, Adofo described the entire suspension process as politically motivated and “a dangerous road of no return.”
“The way they are going, it is very dangerous. John Mahama should not have gone this road,” Adofo cautioned.
“He is dangerously heading on a road of no return.”
He argued that Mahama’s involvement in triggering the inquiry into the Chief Justice’s conduct appears to be driven more by politics than justice.
“If this unlawful procedure is allowed to happen, then the future of lawyers and defendants—Ghanaians—is in danger,” he added.
Lawyer Adofo insisted that the Chief Justice must resist pressure to resign, especially if she believes she has done nothing wrong.
“Resigning when you know you have done nothing wrong is never an option,” he declared, expressing solidarity with the embattled CJ.
He concluded with a stark warning: “It is very bad. He is setting a wrong precedent and history will not judge him well.”
