President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate distribution of food stocks held in warehouses.
Speaking at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service in Accra on Sunday, January 12, 2025, President Mahama acknowledged the pressing challenge of feeding students and announced emergency measures to ensure their well-being.
“We have a challenge currently with feeding students in secondary schools,” the president admitted, adding, “As a stopgap measure, I have asked the Chief of Staff to work with the Ghana Education Service to allocate and evacuate food that is currently held in warehouses in Tema.”
The directive mobilizes existing food reserves, initially imported to counter previous drought conditions, to provide immediate relief to struggling schools.
This intervention aims to maintain the continuity of education and safeguard the integrity of the Free SHS policy, which President Mahama reiterated is a priority for his administration.
The food crisis had prompted the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) to urge parents to supplement their children’s meals due to insufficient supplies.
