The Minority in Parliament has taken a stance against Speaker Alban Bagbin’s suspension of their members, launching a protest in the corridors of the legislature this morning.
Claded in red and black chanting patriotic songs, the opposition members in parliament have vowed not to participate in sitting of committee set up by the Speaker to probe the chaos until the suspension of members is overturned.
The protest, which unfolded just outside the chamber, saw the presence of key opposition figures, including the National Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ayensu Ntim, alongside other parliamentary leaders and party executives.
This dramatic display follows the Speaker’s controversial 14-day suspension of two chief Whips for both the Minority and Majority caucuses, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor and Frank Annoh-Dompreh, as well as Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib—over chaotic scenes that erupted during the vetting of ministerial nominees on January 30, 2025.
Security Tightened Security tightened to prevent suspended MPs to chamber
With the Minority’s defiance growing, parliamentary security has been tightened, reportedly to enforce the Speaker’s order barring the suspended MPs from participating in today’s proceedings.
