Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has nominated Kofi Iddie Adams, Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency in the Oti Region, as the Minister of Sports and Recreation.
Adams is part of the third batch of ministerial nominees submitted to Parliament for vetting and approval through the Speaker. If approved, he will succeed Mustapha Ussif, who served as Minister of Youth and Sports from 2021 under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.
A former National Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams is well-known for his passion for sports, particularly boxing. Many in Ghana’s sports fraternity are optimistic that his appointment will usher in a revival of the country’s sports sector, rekindling its glory days.
Before assuming office, Adams will undergo the necessary vetting process by Parliament.
The 49-year-old has a robust political resume, having served as the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC and later being elected National Organizer during the party’s National Executive elections in December 2014.
In 2016, Adams was appointed as the campaign coordinator for the NDC’s 15-member national campaign team during the general elections. His political acumen and leadership skills have made him a prominent figure within the NDC and beyond.
As the sports sector awaits his official appointment, stakeholders anticipate that Kofi Adams will introduce policies and initiatives to revamp sports development, provide better facilities, and enhance Ghana’s representation in international competitions.
