South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25, just weeks after representing Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
South African media reported Adams’ passing on Saturday. The circumstances surrounding his death have not been disclosed, with the cause yet to be made public.
Adams was a key member of the South African squad that made history by reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time. The midfielder featured in all three of Bafana Bafana’s group-stage matches before the team exited the competition with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32.
The talented midfielder joined Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025 after an impressive spell with Stellenbosch FC, where he made 139 appearances and helped the club lift the 2023 Carling Knockout title.
His move to Sundowns proved equally successful, as he played a role in the club’s league triumph and CAF Champions League success. Adams also represented South Africa at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, helping the national team secure a third-place finish.
Following the World Cup, Adams had been expected to return to Mamelodi Sundowns for the club’s pre-season preparations in Austria later this month.
His passing comes at a time when South Africa’s national team was looking to build on its encouraging World Cup campaign. Head coach Hugo Broos had recently spoken about the future of the squad, with Adams regarded as one of the young players expected to play a central role in the team’s continued development.
As of Saturday, Mamelodi Sundowns had not released an official statement regarding the midfielder’s death, while no further details surrounding the cause of his passing had been announced.
