Heart of Lions head coach Bashir Hayford has made it clear that the Ghana Premier League title race is far from settled, despite his team trailing league leaders Asante Kotoko by five points.
The Kpando-based side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bibiani Gold Stars, a setback that saw them drop to third place with 40 points. Meanwhile, Kotoko remain at the top with 45 points, just a point ahead of second-placed Bibiani Gold Stars (44 points).
Despite the loss, Hayford remains optimistic about his team’s title chances. Speaking at his post-match press conference, the experienced tactician emphasized that there is still plenty of time to close the gap and challenge for the trophy.
“We have about ten matches left, and ten matches mean 30 points,” Hayford stated.
“If someone is leading by five points and there are still 30 points to fight for, we can’t just relax and assume they have won already.”
The veteran coach also highlighted that football is unpredictable, and history has shown that even larger deficits can be overturned.
“It is not over. Even when someone leads by ten points, you can still catch up. We will keep pushing and see what we can achieve.”
Heart of Lions will have the perfect opportunity to narrow the gap when they take on league leaders Asante Kotoko in a highly anticipated April 6 clash at the Kpando Stadium.
A win for Hayford’s side would throw the title race wide open, making the final stretch of the season even more exciting. With all three teams at the top pushing for the championship, the battle for the Ghana Premier League title is set to be a thrilling contest in the weeks ahead.
