The camp of former Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the clear winner in the party’s constituency executive elections in the Ashanti Region with candidates aligned with him reportedly securing about 92 percent of all elected positions.
The outcome of the two day exercise held over the weekend underscores Dr. Bawumia’s growing influence within the party’s most formidable electoral stronghold and signals a significant consolidation of his grassroots support as the NPP embarks on rebuilding efforts ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Figures compiled by party insiders indicate that candidates who publicly identified with Dr. Bawumia during the party’s presidential primaries dominated the polls across the region. In several constituencies, the Bawumia camp won every available executive position while no constituency recorded less than 70 percent representation by candidates aligned with the former Vice President.
Even in constituencies where a leading pro-Bawumia contender failed to secure victory, the successful candidate was also said to belong to the Bawumia camp allowing his supporters to maintain control of the constituency executive structures.
The remaining estimated eight percent of elected executives are believed to comprise individuals who previously supported either Kennedy Agyapong or Bryan Acheampong during the NPP’s presidential primaries. While many have since publicly declared their support for Dr. Bawumia in the interest of party unity, party sources maintain that their earlier political affiliations were with rival camps.
Political analysts say the outcome could prove significant as the opposition party undertakes internal reorganisation following its defeat in the 2024 general election. With the Ashanti Region widely regarded as the NPP’s electoral heartbeat, control of its constituency structures is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the party’s direction, internal cohesion and preparations for the next electoral cycle.
The constituency executive elections form part of the NPP’s nationwide reorganisation aimed at strengthening its grassroots machinery and repositioning the party ahead of future national contests. The Ashanti Region results are likely to fuel discussions over Dr. Bawumia’s standing within the party and his prospects as a leading figure in the NPP’s political future.
