Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia appears to be cruising steadily toward securing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential ticket for the 2028 elections, according to fresh insights from Global InfoAnalytics.
Senior Analyst at the research institution, Salam Nsiah, told ABC News GH on Tuesday, July 1, that Bawumia commands significant lead and popularity within the party and even among some opposition voters.
“Bawumia is pretty comfortable, likely to be NPP 2028 presidential candidate,” Nsiah said, citing the Vice President’s 70% backing among NPP supporters and 56% among general voters surveyed.
Nsiah explained that although the internal flagbearership contest is scheduled for January 2026, Bawumia’s lead has been consistent and could prove insurmountable if he maintains momentum.
“There could be some twist in preference with the last five months left,” he cautioned, emphasizing the importance of staying visible and active as rivals like Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum still attract notable support.
However, he pointed out that Bawumia’s cross-party appeal—gaining 50% preference from NDC voters polled—adds a strategic edge to his candidacy.
While Bawumia’s trajectory seems clearer, Nsiah noted the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) may face internal dilemmas as their top contender, Haruna Iddrisu, risks being sidelined over regional considerations.
“If the party decides not to go with another northern candidate after Mahama, that will be a real challenge for Haruna,” he said, referencing similar polling data showing Haruna in a close race with Asiedu Nketia and Ato Forson.
