A fresh survey by Africa Policy Lens has positioned former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the leading contender in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race for the 2028 general elections.
According to the report, Bawumia commands a strong 70.6% backing among NPP supporters, far outpacing his closest rival, Kennedy Agyapong, who polled 21.4%.
Analysts attribute Bawumia’s lead to his Northern roots, which are seen as a strategic asset in expanding the NPP’s reach into traditionally NDC-leaning regions.
The survey also indicates that Bawumia holds a dominant presence in 12 of the 16 regions, including strongholds like Ashanti and Eastern, as well as swing regions such as Greater Accra.
Interestingly, the poll also reveals cross-party dynamics, with 48.4% of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters preferring Kennedy Agyapong as the NPP’s candidate, while 35.3% expressed a preference for Bawumia.
Despite this, Bawumia appears to have broader national appeal, especially in the North, where he is projected to win in all five northern regions.
However, the report flags potential resistance in NDC strongholds like Volta and Western North, suggesting the NPP must adopt targeted strategies to consolidate support in these areas.
