The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has outlined plans to give Senior High School (SHS) headmasters the responsibility of procuring food for their students if elected into power.
According to Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the NDC, the move is part of efforts to improve the Free Senior High School (FSHS) Policy, particularly regarding the quality of food served to students.
Asiedu Nketia explained that the current system, where multiple suppliers provide foodstuffs to schools, has led to poor-quality meals, with some suppliers failing to meet their contractual obligations.
Speaking during a community engagement in the Suame Constituency, Asiedu Nketia criticized the existing procurement model, alleging that it has created inefficiencies and encouraged state exploitation.
He said headmasters are often forced to provide whatever food is available due to delayed or inadequate supplies, depriving students of a balanced diet.
“The policy itself is good, but its implementation needs improvement,” he added, calling for a review of the system to ensure better outcomes for students.
In addition to food procurement reforms, Asiedu Nketia reiterated the NDC’s commitment to abolishing the double track system.
He promised that an NDC government would prioritize completing the unfinished E-blocks and expanding SHS facilities to accommodate all students at once.
The National Chairman urged the public to ignore misconceptions about the party’s education policy, emphasizing that these changes would enhance the FSHS initiative without dismantling it.
