The Communication Director of Asante Kotoko, Lawyer Samuel Sarfo Duku, has voiced the club’s dissatisfaction with the equal distribution of television rights revenue in the Ghana Premier League (GPL).
His comments come at the back of the proposal Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak jointly submitted to the Ghana Football Association after the death of popular Kotoko fan Yaw Frimpong. Among the numerous demands made in the proposal was the transparency of television rights in terms of broadcasting the Ghana Premier League.
Duku believes that clubs like Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, who consistently attract larger viewership and have more of their matches televised, should receive a greater share of the broadcast earnings.
“It is not fair for the Television rights money to be shared equally among the clubs if our matches are shown more than the other clubs. It is only fair that we get a greater share of the amount,” he stated on Sports World on ABC News GH TV.
Asante Kotoko, alongside Hearts of Oak, regularly feature in live broadcasts, drawing larger audiences and greater commercial interest. The club argues that the current distribution model, which allocates funds equally among all 18 GPL teams, does not adequately reflect the commercial value brought by teams with larger fanbases.
