The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is taking decisive action to preserve and honor the legacy of its founder, the late former President Jerry John Rawlin gs, through major proposals aimed at embedding his influence into the party’s core identity.
Speaking at the 46th anniversary of the June 4 uprising at Agormanya Lasi Park in the Eastern Region, NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah announced that the party’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) has endorsed several key proposals, pending final approval by the National Executive Committee (NEC).
A major highlight is the planned renaming of the party’s national headquarters to “Jerry Rawlings House.”
Asiedu Nketiah stated, “Around the world, party headquarters are named after their founders. Ghana should be no different.
We will initiate the process to rename our national office in honor of Rawlings,” drawing loud applause from attendees. Further proposals include amending the NDC’s constitution to recognize June 22—Rawlings’ birthday—as a significant party date and designating the entire month of June as “NDC Month” to commemorate his contributions annually.
Asiedu Nketiah also voiced strong concern over the condition of Revolutionary Square, located near the Jubilee House.
He called for the formation of a planning committee to explore restoring the site to its former stature, possibly in coordination with the Museums and Monuments Board.
“It’s more than a monument—it’s a historical lesson for our youth,” he stressed. The June 4 uprising, led by then Flight Lieutenant Rawlings in 1979, remains a defining moment in the NDC’s history, embodying the principles of accountability, discipline, and revolutionary transformation.
