Political scientist Mohammed Abass has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to place integrity at the centre of its internal reforms following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
In an interview with ABC News, Mr. Abass noted that rather than shifting blame onto individuals, the party should reflect on the broader systemic and leadership issues that may have eroded public trust and led to their electoral downfall.
He stressed that the NPP must now ask itself difficult questions about how integrity featured in its governance and campaign messaging.
Mr. Abass also emphasized the importance of unity and clarity in the party’s post-election activities, particularly its ongoing nationwide “Thank You” tour.
He believes the tour should not be viewed as a ceremonial gesture but as a strategic opportunity to reconnect with the grassroots, rebuild confidence, and set a new tone for party renewal.
He added that leadership must clearly communicate the purpose of the tour to all party members, especially those who are disillusioned.
The 2024 election, which saw the National Democratic Congress (NDC) reclaim power under John Dramani Mahama, marked a significant shift in Ghana’s political landscape and has triggered introspection within the ruling NPP as it looks toward the future.
